LEARNING TO TURN INTO A DRAGON...
I'M A LITTLE WORRIED YOU'RE GOING TO BREATH FIRE, ASK QUESTIONS LATER...
AND LIGHT MORE POTENTIAL FRIENDS ON FIRE?!
ICE BREATH WOULD BE SO MUCH COOLER.

their first meeting really set a lot of expectations in place: a human who suddenly tosses fire, aggressive and confused questioning, and only calms down after a bit. lambert's blunt and aggressive... and that's all stuff papyrus misses from undyne, so he had no issue rolling with it. the fire didn't even hurt that much.

but for real, even past missing a friend and enjoying hanging out with someone who reminds him of them, they're cool. papyrus has a sorta irreverent respect for lambert; the guy's pretty okay for the product of his world, only a tiny bit monster racist, and takes his job really seriously. and since doing your job sometimes means not being nice, lambert has a great reason for almost never being nice. compared to all the people who tiptoe around trying not to hurt papyrus' feelings because he's such a cinnamon roll and they would feel bad, lambert's bluntness was genuinely welcome.

i maintain that offscreen they spar sometimes, albeit in the not-trying-to-kill, holds-barred way that papyrus tends to use -- since he spends more time playing with the aesthetics of his attacks than getting down to deadly business, he's not great as prep for fighting against sans. sorry about that, kinda. not really, because he's not going to teach anybody how to kill his brother... but it's not like lambert would want to.

HAY IS FOR HORSES, NOT SKELETONS.
ALTHOUGH...
YOU ARE A LOT OF NOT-SKELETON THINGS NOW.
IS ANY OF THEM A HORSE??
WOULD YOU KNOW?
I KNOW THAT I DON'T KNOW.

the core of it is, they're brothers. they each appreciate and sometimes rely on each other's strengths, and share exasperation with each other's flaws. exasperation so old it's practically moldy.

there's a lot of deep™ metaphor stuff i can make from the two kinds of blue magic they share. blue bones, where the lesson is that if you stay still - if you don't move, don't act, just wait - things can just pass through you without hurting. 'being blue' is being down, sad, and heavy, but needing to keep moving to avoid injury, jumping at opportunities at the right moment. and these different, equally existent obstacles that push action or inaction...
it them

but not so simply as "sans does nothing, papyrus does everything."

papyrus used to tell himself that's how it was, in those few years when they had a pretty comfortable routine going. when sans so openly didn't care or do much besides enjoy the small things in life and deflect everything with humor. when papyrus was the one who cared enough for both of them, ordering and reordering the house to his liking (mostly), nagging sans to do the things papyrus was sure were best for him. and some of the time he was even right, or close enough to right that it was helpful. in a lot of ways, that whole thing was based on mutual avoidance. papyrus avoided mentioning the things he couldn't remember, and worked hard at making himself memorable so nobody would forget him the same way. sans cared deeply about papyrus, and stuck through a lot of overbearing brothering to humor him and know the caring was mutual.

for papyrus, that changed a big way with kingship, and the somewhat partnership that worked up between them - papyrus emphasizing morale, encouragement, symbolic kindnesses, and policies to reduce harm, while sans kept up the king's role in the government and economy was, making it work. papyrus relied on strengths of sans he'd thought were gone, and if it weren't for the human, and the amount of hurt and pressure from how people can demand things you can't do for them... he could have been there long enough to learn to take more on himself, to share it instead of see-sawing between dependence and pushing around. instead, he went to the carnival, thinking he'd escaped all the awful pressure, and could save things and go back -- only to find sans here, and worse in all those evasive ways. they had a few near-confrontations, a few partial-reveals, a few conversations that one or both backed out of. too much motionless, evasive blueness.

nowadays, papyrus thinks sans is still made of secrets. and more willing to share them, sometimes. that he takes a lot more initiative to do things, to push others to do things... but still doesn't seem to believe in himself, or think well of himself.

and NOW, nowadays, mid-event? it's obvious some mind control was going on, with the memory loss before the ball. he'll hear about more of it, the way the captured servants were twisted somehow, soon enough. and he'll know, there was true stuff in the painful things sans said. stuff they don't talk about, have avoided talking about.

this is incomplete and shit but the tab's been open forever. i can always add / clarify

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A COOL MOVE!
A DEMONSTRATION OF MY MASTERY OF BLUE MAGIC, AND GRAVITY MANIPULATION, AND SWEET KICKS!
BUT...
I FORGOT ABOUT WIND.
ASK ME TO SHOW YOU AGAIN LATER!
MAYBE OFF THE MOUNTAIN, BY THE LAKE!
YOU CAN WATCH BETTER THERE, WHEN YOU'RE NOT BEING KIDNAPPED, ANYWAY.

in truth, they haven't interacted onscreen a whole lot. his primary impression is of someone easily alarmed, and just as easily sucked into curiosity about the Mysteries of Magic (and/or Science, but... the line between those is pretty darn fuzzy when you're a monster whose cellphone has hammer space).

since he enjoys being the center of attention, and he's already sorta used to putting up with that kind of interrogative, science-minded questioning, that's all pretty easy for him to get along with.

WHAT DO YOU THINK GARGOYLES EAT???
I MEAN, I HAVEN'T SEEN THEM EAT ANYTHING.
BUT THEY SURE LIKE GRABBING HOLD OF PEOPLE, CARRYING THEM OFF TO A GIANT MOUTH...
AND HUMMINGBIRDS AREN'T VERY BIG.
IT'S PROBABLY BEST YOU STAYED BELOW!!!

balcony team probably started out with them trying to make small talk, all awkwardly positive because the situation is terrible... until they found some subject to ramble about. like, look at those stars, do stars look like that??

because carly and papyrus tend to go back and forth, ramping up the self-confidence-fueling sentiments with more and more rambunctious enthusiasm. or maybe they got to gossiping about their pokemon, because they're still the cubone trainer buddies, occasionally hanging out and supervising offscreen fights (emphasis on supervise because the risk of eggs is probably real!) they're a good team for mutual morale support, but not so hot on solving the kinds of high stakes, high speed problems that events come with.

WE MADE IT! WE'RE NOT CAPTURED YET!!
AND YET...
WE LOST SO MANY ALONG THE WAY.
IS IT TOO EARLY FOR CELEBRATIONS?
SHOULD WE HAVE A CEREMONY FOR THE FALLEN?
THE FALLEN WHO COULDN'T JUMP BACK UP THE BUILDING, I MEAN.
SINCE THEY WERE LESS-THAN SIX FEET UNDER LIVING STATUES.

scout and papyrus' conversations tend to start with one expressing concern about the other... and somehow wind up talking about death, and the differences of the realities they live with, for a bit? scout seems to humor his questions and strong opinions with equal politeness, and clearly they're both equally willing to run around the roof and walls of a giant mansion, defying gravity like a couple of reckless assholes. are they slightly morbid jock friends?

A LOT OF STUFF HAS HAPPENED SINCE ATLANTIS...
GOOD, BAD, AND REALLY REALLY TERRIBLE.
BUT THERE'S ONE BRIGHT SIDE TO IT ALL:
AT LEAST NOBODY GOT CAUGHT IN A WHIRLPOOL!

okay i just scoured my thread tracking because i knew they'd had at least one thread... and not only was it not on there, but i think their thread in atlantis was the only time they've interacted onscreen? this is illegal, they're both much too loud and enthusiastic and optimistic to have been interacting so little. we need them to do reckless things and chance consequences more.

AND THE PART WHERE YOU DISTRIBUTE MYSTERIOUS MEDICINES.
MAYBE THAT'S A SIDE JOB?

ginko and papyrus occasionally have rambling, shooting the breeze conversations about current events, and their ideas for improving the carnival (mostly papyrus' ideas). they've probably met more than that, especially with the fairly mild mushi infection, and papyrus coming by as he wanders all around the carnival. he thinks ginko's pretty knowledgeable about some random things, and humble/honest enough not to claim more than he knows - which makes him a great sounding board for ideas. thanks ginko

9S...
ARE YOU NAMED THAT BECAUSE THERE WERE EIGHTEEN NINES BEFORE YOU?
OR MAYBE EIGHT 'S'ES?
COMPUTER CULTURE SURE IS STRANGE.

9s is super literal, or practical-minded, to the point that papyrus keeps finding himself at a loss for words; his experience with living robots is mettaton, after all. very, very different situation, what with mettaton being primarily an entertainment robot. he doesn't know what to make of this guy's solemnity, and he's heard down the grapevine (or the loud radio chatter) about those low opinions of aliens who invade earth. how would 9s feel about the humans of the undertale world, whose ancestors locked monsters away underground? if it ever comes up, he's going to ask.

WHEEZES EIGHTEEN NINES OR EIGHT NINES.

9S would be pretty displeased if he learns about the gossip that's been going on begins his back. It's pretty funny that Papyrus finds him so literal/practical minded, because he's usually not like that. Just. That Thread lol.

EVERY TIME I LOOK AT YOU, YOU'RE WORKING.
HARDER... BETTER... FASTER...
AND, OF COURSE, OUR WORK IS NEVER OVER!
BUT YOU DON'T SEEM ANY HAPPIER.
THAT'S A LITTLE DAFT, DON'T YOU THINK?

papyrus used to think that sans would be the greatest challenge in the world, w/regards to the challenge of encouraging him to believe in himself, act for the sake of pursuing his dreams, and generally be a happy and productive person.

now he's met foster.

for all that papyrus does the intense, unwavering belief thing, that doesn't mean he's as oblivious as he comes across. close to it, sometimes, but in this case? he knows something's not right here. foster makes such utterly self-disparaging remarks, pessimistically dismisses every encouragement... and never seems to express pride in himself, or his accomplishments. hardly expresses joy, for all that he laughs. the skeletons put up enough fronts themselves, papyrus can see there's fronts roughly covering some really awful self esteem. what a terrible way to live! truly, using magic to imprison and control corpses has nothing on how much trouble papyrus has with knowing somebody thinks of themselves that way.

not that papyrus knew all this, going into psi's assignment. it came out, in bits in pieces, through that attempted mentorship. papyrus reflexively complimented and encouraged, foster shot it all down, and papyrus took it as a challenge. everybody deserves to think well of themselves! no matter what!! they also, if they so choose, have the right to choose not to. papyrus doesn't see the point and won't hide it, but what can you do... besides remind them of the option, and compliment the good things, and demonstrate how to be confident?

so now? yeah, it's like you said; unstoppable force and unmovable object. papyrus refuses to be outdone, or to surrender. he'll probably change tactics along the line, if further insights into foster come up, but he'll keep trying. that kind of stubborn confidence in people is one of the foundations of papyrus' self-confidence; if he somehow totally gave up on someone, it would damage him. foster's still a potential friend, as is everyone in the entire multiverse, but on some level he's also a project for papyrus to bolster his own self-esteem. it's not insincere, but that's part of the force behind it

NO WONDER YOU PARTICULARLY LOVE MY SAND SCULPTURES... THEY MUST HAVE REMINDED YOU OF HOME!
BUT, DO THEY ALSO MAKE YOU HOMESICK?
THE CARNIVAL ISN'T AN OCEAN, AND THERE'S HARDLY ANY BOATS HERE.
MAYBE THE LAKE IS BIG ENOUGH.

it's true, they haven't talked much or about particularly deep topics. but the radio chats they've had were positive and validating; papyrus loves to talk about himself and hear people agree about how great his artwork is.

his whole mental image of sora right now is "the kid from an ocean boating world," he's got zero notion of heartless or how suspiciously soul-like hearts are, much less any of the problems of being destined to do great things.
