I'M A LITTLE WORRIED YOU'RE GOING TO BREATH FIRE, ASK QUESTIONS LATER...
AND LIGHT MORE POTENTIAL FRIENDS ON FIRE?!
ICE BREATH WOULD BE SO MUCH COOLER.
their first meeting really set a lot of expectations in place: a human who suddenly tosses fire, aggressive and confused questioning, and only calms down after a bit. lambert's blunt and aggressive... and that's all stuff papyrus misses from undyne, so he had no issue rolling with it. the fire didn't even hurt that much.
but for real, even past missing a friend and enjoying hanging out with someone who reminds him of them, they're cool. papyrus has a sorta irreverent respect for lambert; the guy's pretty okay for the product of his world, only a tiny bit monster racist, and takes his job really seriously. and since doing your job sometimes means not being nice, lambert has a great reason for almost never being nice. compared to all the people who tiptoe around trying not to hurt papyrus' feelings because he's such a cinnamon roll and they would feel bad, lambert's bluntness was genuinely welcome.
i maintain that offscreen they spar sometimes, albeit in the not-trying-to-kill, holds-barred way that papyrus tends to use -- since he spends more time playing with the aesthetics of his attacks than getting down to deadly business, he's not great as prep for fighting against sans. sorry about that, kinda. not really, because he's not going to teach anybody how to kill his brother... but it's not like lambert would want to.

OOCly of course I love the Undyne-Lambert parallels even if it's not something that would have occurred to me immediately. :')
And yeah, they totally spar, Papyrus just probably has to initiate it (and that's not hard to imagine). Lambert thinks it's pretty goofy in some ways because c'mon Papyrus, this isn't a show! But I wanna say that since Papyrus is pretty goofy and show-offy, that probably comes out in how Lambert spars with him as well -- a lot of sweet flips, kicks, and rolls that would get him reamed in real combat.

oh my god, a chance for the stupidly showy stuff that he can't do in real stuff, but it's fun to just mess around sometimes? excellent, excellent. i wonder if they get anybody hanging around watching them do this (sans) and how much of a mess that part of the grounds is.
