EVERY TIME I LOOK AT YOU, YOU'RE WORKING.
HARDER... BETTER... FASTER...
AND, OF COURSE, OUR WORK IS NEVER OVER!
BUT YOU DON'T SEEM ANY HAPPIER.
THAT'S A LITTLE DAFT, DON'T YOU THINK?

papyrus used to think that sans would be the greatest challenge in the world, w/regards to the challenge of encouraging him to believe in himself, act for the sake of pursuing his dreams, and generally be a happy and productive person.

now he's met foster.

for all that papyrus does the intense, unwavering belief thing, that doesn't mean he's as oblivious as he comes across. close to it, sometimes, but in this case? he knows something's not right here. foster makes such utterly self-disparaging remarks, pessimistically dismisses every encouragement... and never seems to express pride in himself, or his accomplishments. hardly expresses joy, for all that he laughs. the skeletons put up enough fronts themselves, papyrus can see there's fronts roughly covering some really awful self esteem. what a terrible way to live! truly, using magic to imprison and control corpses has nothing on how much trouble papyrus has with knowing somebody thinks of themselves that way.

not that papyrus knew all this, going into psi's assignment. it came out, in bits in pieces, through that attempted mentorship. papyrus reflexively complimented and encouraged, foster shot it all down, and papyrus took it as a challenge. everybody deserves to think well of themselves! no matter what!! they also, if they so choose, have the right to choose not to. papyrus doesn't see the point and won't hide it, but what can you do... besides remind them of the option, and compliment the good things, and demonstrate how to be confident?

so now? yeah, it's like you said; unstoppable force and unmovable object. papyrus refuses to be outdone, or to surrender. he'll probably change tactics along the line, if further insights into foster come up, but he'll keep trying. that kind of stubborn confidence in people is one of the foundations of papyrus' self-confidence; if he somehow totally gave up on someone, it would damage him. foster's still a potential friend, as is everyone in the entire multiverse, but on some level he's also a project for papyrus to bolster his own self-esteem. it's not insincere, but that's part of the force behind it
