spaghettimonster: (MY SPECIAL BLUE ATTACK)

HAY IS FOR HORSES, NOT SKELETONS.
ALTHOUGH...
YOU ARE A LOT OF NOT-SKELETON THINGS NOW.
IS ANY OF THEM A HORSE??
WOULD YOU KNOW?
I KNOW THAT I DON'T KNOW.

the core of it is, they're brothers. they each appreciate and sometimes rely on each other's strengths, and share exasperation with each other's flaws. exasperation so old it's practically moldy.

there's a lot of deep™ metaphor stuff i can make from the two kinds of blue magic they share. blue bones, where the lesson is that if you stay still - if you don't move, don't act, just wait - things can just pass through you without hurting. 'being blue' is being down, sad, and heavy, but needing to keep moving to avoid injury, jumping at opportunities at the right moment. and these different, equally existent obstacles that push action or inaction...
it them

but not so simply as "sans does nothing, papyrus does everything."

papyrus used to tell himself that's how it was, in those few years when they had a pretty comfortable routine going. when sans so openly didn't care or do much besides enjoy the small things in life and deflect everything with humor. when papyrus was the one who cared enough for both of them, ordering and reordering the house to his liking (mostly), nagging sans to do the things papyrus was sure were best for him. and some of the time he was even right, or close enough to right that it was helpful. in a lot of ways, that whole thing was based on mutual avoidance. papyrus avoided mentioning the things he couldn't remember, and worked hard at making himself memorable so nobody would forget him the same way. sans cared deeply about papyrus, and stuck through a lot of overbearing brothering to humor him and know the caring was mutual.

for papyrus, that changed a big way with kingship, and the somewhat partnership that worked up between them - papyrus emphasizing morale, encouragement, symbolic kindnesses, and policies to reduce harm, while sans kept up the king's role in the government and economy was, making it work. papyrus relied on strengths of sans he'd thought were gone, and if it weren't for the human, and the amount of hurt and pressure from how people can demand things you can't do for them... he could have been there long enough to learn to take more on himself, to share it instead of see-sawing between dependence and pushing around. instead, he went to the carnival, thinking he'd escaped all the awful pressure, and could save things and go back -- only to find sans here, and worse in all those evasive ways. they had a few near-confrontations, a few partial-reveals, a few conversations that one or both backed out of. too much motionless, evasive blueness.

nowadays, papyrus thinks sans is still made of secrets. and more willing to share them, sometimes. that he takes a lot more initiative to do things, to push others to do things... but still doesn't seem to believe in himself, or think well of himself.

and NOW, nowadays, mid-event? it's obvious some mind control was going on, with the memory loss before the ball. he'll hear about more of it, the way the captured servants were twisted somehow, soon enough. and he'll know, there was true stuff in the painful things sans said. stuff they don't talk about, have avoided talking about.

this is incomplete and shit but the tab's been open forever. i can always add / clarify
