⇨ OOC GREETINGS & PLOTTING

THE PLOT THICKENS

Congrats to everyone who has had their application accepted so far, and welcome to Lost Carnival! The game isn't planned to start until Saturday, but in the meantime this is going to be our great big CR planning and plotting post to get us ready to go. I'm going to be outlining some of the more recent events in carnival history in more detail, which is mostly going to be useful to veteran players, but it'll also be good to know for new arrivals to give them a better idea of the atmosphere their character are entering into.

As many of you likely know, the most relevant event in the carnival's recent history is the VAMPIRE WAR.

That is, when a mercenary job taken on by the Nightrider's team on a particular world resulted in a group of vampire sorcerers following them back to the carnival and wrecking the place. (Check out the extended history for more info.) A lot of damage was done in the fighting, and while the vampires were eventually killed/ousted, around 4-5 carnival members were killed. This disaster resulted in a large portion of the carnival's employees finishing up their contracts and returning home in the following months, discouraged by the destruction. Death and violence is not something the carnival sees a lot of in the average season, and so it was very much considered to be a turn for the worst.

In the comments below, there is going to be a top level encouraging the discussing and brainstorming of specific identities to give those killed in the attack, since there were not that many of them over all and presumably veterans should have names associated with those lost. At least one of the was the previous Warden, who was drained of her blood and killed during the battle. The other four can be potentially anyone, so if you have any concepts for victims that would help your veteran backstory, let us know below!

As it often goes with vampires, a large portion of vampire forces were neonates - that is, young vampires that were only recently made. A large number of neonates were killed during the fighting, but it seems like most of the elders that came along retreated at the end without being destroyed. The older the vampire, the more powerful their magic, and in this case the strength of those elders was much more than even the Ringmaster was expecting. The vampires were wielding a variety of spells, most of which fit in the category of what you would call black or infernal magic.

Beyond that, vampire abilities seemed to average out at invulnerability to most physical wounds (fire, blows to the heart, and decapitation being the exceptions), super speed, super strength, and a natural skill for hypnosis and mind control. It's entirely possible that some of the veterans present were bewitched into aiding the vampires temporarily during the attack.

THE SUMMERLANDS

After the vampire attack, the carnival was completely out of commission. Its grounds were left smoldering, and its employees were traumatized - so the Ringmaster decided to send everyone on vacation, to one of the few places she considers truly safe. That is, the Summerlands.

The Summerlands is an idyllic realm inhabited by a population of summer fae, as the Ringmaster calls them. Generally speaking, they are a species of magical humanoids with pointed ears, unearthly beauty, sometimes wings, and a penchant for magic associated with the power of the sun and growth. The Ringmaster will refer to them as old allies of hers, though not the same kind of fae as she is. She won't be inclined to go into much more detail than that.

While not exactly aloof, the summer fae there tend to be somewhat uncomprehending of the problems most mortals face. While they do have a concept of ethics, it is hard to compare to that of most of the carnival's employees, and their outlook on things tends towards that of a very neutral perspective. Rather than having much interest in war or politics, they are primarily focused on enjoying existence and the celebration of nature.

Either way, they are gracious hosts, and for the two months or so the carnival lingered there the workers were treated to no shortage of food and wine, and eternally perfect weather.

This queen of this realm is a fae called the Summer Maiden, who apparently has a close relationship with the Ringmaster. So much in fact that the two of them disappeared together for almost the entire duration, leaving the carnival to relax and perform at their leisure. The Ringmaster was having such a good time that she almost forgot to leave.

THE CROSSROADS

The Crossroads is essentially a mega mall, except built in a rift between dimensions, kept stable by a mixture of magic and technology from a council that the Ringmaster doesn't care enough to know the details of. There are not that many species out there that can cross between universes freely, but in a multiverse of thousands of worlds, even a very small percentage can add up to a lot of visitors. Or, in this case, a lot of alien strip malls.

The stores in the crossroads sell goods from all over the multiverse, sometimes with a barter system and sometimes with something simply called "currency" that one can convert items of value into when they arrive. The Ringmaster gifted all her remaining employees with an "allowance" to spend in their time there, so if they needed new clothes or other supplies, this was the time to do it. It wasn't enough to buy any high end relics or technology, but it was certainly enough to buy more novelty t-shirts than you can easily hold.

Along with being given spending money, they were all put up in various hotels for the duration, while the carnival was being repaired. There was seemingly an infinite quantity of strange goods, foods, and attractions to see in the duration, but even in a three month stay it'd be impossible to see everything. The local culture of the Crossroads can be sort of difficult to grasp for outsiders, though, so exploring the whole thing may have not felt very inviting in the first place. With every market there is a black market, after all.

THE IMPORTANT PART
And that brings us to the present carnival timeline! Having finally returned to duty (the last "season" has mostly been hanging out with the summer fae and doing the occasional "performances" in the Crossroads without any of the carnival's equipment) the Ringmaster is recruiting non stop to try to refill the ranks. A promising batch of newbies have been claimed as the veteran get used to their rebuilt home, and the whole gang tries to press forward. This post is for vets to plot out backstory, and for everyone to plot for the future ahead.

There will be a couple top levels below, but after that it's open season! Please introduce yourself OOCly and tell us about your characters, and what you'd like to achieve with them. For veterans, feel free to include as much additional timeline information as you see fit - some people have made history outlines where they write down what your character was doing at each stop they were present for, so go ahead and link those if you have them.

Newbies, now is the time to meet your new coworkers! Welcome to Lost Carnival, and I hope you all enjoy your time playing here.

⇨ THE HEAD COOK

[personal profile] cuckooed 2016-10-12 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This is Koel Babic. After the events of Vampire World, she was appointed as the Head Cook. She looks human, but in reality, she is a vampire. A brain vampire, whose subsists on her victims' memories, thoughts, emotions, and personality, as opposed to their blood. Not that she can't eat human flesh in general otherwise.

She'd been with the carnival a little over a year at that point, and while there had been some rumors and insinuations that Koel wasn't human even before she arrived, while she had been instrumental in taking down a ring of cashiers skimming off of the top near the beginning of her time there, on the whole the carnival hadn't focused much on it, most people hadn't given it much thought to Koel's abilities and true form, and the previous Head Cook hadn't paid much mind to it. Until Vampire World.

When the war happened, no one was expecting it, least of all the Head Cook. She had panicked, and had hidden in a closet in the Cookhouse, leaving her staff to deal with the approaching vampires. It was at this point that Koel - then a line cook - made up a strategy on the fly. She armed those in the kitchen staff and those who'd come to the Cookhouse for refuge who were willing to fight with butcher knives and instructed them to come with her. those who couldn't fight would stay in the back with the ovens. After all, if their defense failed, they could blow up the Cookhouse and take whoever was inside with it.

The defense worked well. The vampires saw weaklings running around screaming by the Cookhouse and gave chase for an easy kill. They were not expecting another vampire type to be their leader. The first who came was nabbed, eaten, and their form temporarily taken on, and Koel used this form to lure several others to her defenders, who stabbed and decapitated alongside Koel's brain stem eating. To make her point clear, she ordered those with her to take parts of the vampire's flesh before it disintegrated and bring it inside, having those at the ovens cook burgers. The smell of their comrades being cooked, wafting through the air was a psychological tactic that aided in keeping vampires from further harassing the Cookhouse on a whole - the thought of potentially being eaten by whatever was in there cooking their friends was a bit too much for many of them. (The meat actually tasted good, as an added insult.)

This side of Koel frightened several of the newer members after this, including the Head Cook, who, like a good part of the cook staff, promptly left during Summerlands when her contract was up. Koel was awarded the Head Cook position for her actions. Its a story that is no doubt told to scare certain new recruits, especially if they complain about the food. She's shown herself to be stern but fair, and she especially doesn't tolerate laziness in general (Sans, she doesn't care if you're not on her staff, why are you sleeping), wasting food, or a hesitance to cook for the more unique tastes encountered by the carnival. Really, why are you in a carnival kitchen if you're not going to cook for the freaks? How rude. She tends to be less strict with younger recruits, though, who remind her of her grandchildren. She'll still be stern with them, but in a more grandmotherly way. No night snacks for them is a punishment for them.

As for her life before the carnival, she doesn't talk about it much, but she'll offer some bits here and there if anyone asks. She's not being deliberately secret around other workers, its just a given that quite a few in the carnival aren't entirely human. She will correct any rumors that she eats children, though, if that comes up. Why would she eat children when children are the reason she's come to be here in the first place?

We're good with the herbivorous diet, right?

[personal profile] cuckooed 2016-10-12 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! She does her best to keep tabs on the various dietary needs of those she cooks for, so she'd be aware of Zecora's food needs.

Hooray! That's very important. With that established, Zecora is cool with her.

Why am I almost 100% certain that Carly somehow managed to never hear about any of these scary stories ever

she probably just waves and smiles and drinks her soda 'YOU'RE THE BEST COOK YAY why are some of the patrons running'

Clearly they just want to go tell their friends all about her food!!!

Somehow it wouldn't surprise me if she didn't know, because that would be Carly's luck...

Koel reminds Joker of some of the nuns he knew from very very basic schooling from when he was younger, which would make him respectful to her enough, but then the dracula burgers happened, and, well. Joker's smart.

But he was also probably one of the first few who started poking his head in after that because curiosity and, while he'd never admit it, a dark respect for someone who will do fucked up shit for their own. I imagine, through his constant social bothering and because he probably flicked through the kitchen a few times before becoming Stage Manager to help with cooking, they know each other decently.

Or, well, as decently as secretive people are wont to be.

also fuckin badass vulture wings

[personal profile] cuckooed 2016-10-12 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah vulture wings!

Yeah, I can see them knowing each other well enough to know they have things they don't generally talk about. She can definitely respect that. Spy past and all!

By the time Koel joined Doctor would have been part of the scouts but still switching between 2nd part time positions. I figure he was a line cook for a while but kicked out of the kitchen despite his excellent cooking skills because he was chatting too much with the customers and holding up the line. At some point or another he probably has talked her ear off. Don't know how she'd respond to his questions and blabber.

On the up side, assuming she's a friendly mind vampire, he wouldn't hold her species against her. He's likely seen both kind and cruel examples of species with similar diets.
cuckooed: (*sigh*)

[personal profile] cuckooed 2016-10-14 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, Koel has standards. There are cuckoos who attack children or snipe other cuckoos of their Brood targets, but not her.

Possibly the Head Cook before her kicked the Doctor out, oops? Koel wouldn't have necessarily done so, especially if he's a decent cook. She would keep giving him the stern grandmotherly look of "do your job now, talk later."

She'd not mind his talking and questions otherwise much, if only because he's not going to go to the human authorities and turn her in or anything.
trustme: (fez glee)

[personal profile] trustme 2016-10-15 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah let's say it was the last cook that kicked him out. XD It can be one of their funny memories.

I'd say they get along just fine then. He probably greets her every time he swings by for food. If she had any hesitation telling him her species he would've shared his. He also might have asked her at some point if she is a mother or grandmother since she has that nature about her. He won't press her for an answer if it makes her unhappy. Otherwise he'd be willing to tell her that he has been a grandfather.

Since he's a scout and takes said job seriously, Doctor will let her know if he notices any sort of dietary needs for their upcoming guests that weren't already known when he explores the newest world with the rest of the scouts. He's keeping the other supervisors updated similarly.

Do cooks serve oil, or is that something to take up with the repairman?
cuckooed: (what are you saying?)

[personal profile] cuckooed 2016-10-14 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Its an odd request, but Koel's sure she can figure out how to get oil. But if it fails, she'll direct Nona to the repairman.

First off, you have a really interesting character here!

Second, Medli here will probably gravitate towards her sooner rather than later. She was trained for her job at home by an elderly woman who has since passed... and as such has cultivated a deep respect for her elders. Please help Medli loosen up, she's a workaholic.
