Even through all the wackiness the carnival experiences, the relationship between these two has remained as steadfast as ever. Unlike Garnet Amethyst and Pearl, Peridot has never viewed Steven as someone who, primarily, needs to be protected. She views him more readily as an equal and a role model. He has taught her so much! And not just about the Earth and it’s myriad of wonders, but also about how to be a more compassionate and empathetic person, and to embrace her individuality. In a lot of ways, he’s almost like a parent or a teacher to her. Whenever she discovers something new and exciting, or creates a new gadget, Steven will always be one of the first people to see it. She wants to share her enthusiasm with him and earn his praise.
That’s not to say she isn’t protective of him, of course. Peridot is AT ALL TIMES ready to throw down for her friend, and she will actively put herself in the line of fire to stick up for him. People who have hurt him in the past are automatically on her shit-list, even if they’ve done very little to hurt HER personally (looking at you, Jasper). Steven is also her moral compass. She’s still capable of thinking for herself, but it *really* doesn’t take much to sway her over to Steven’s side, even when they initially disagree on something. She just trusts him that implicitly.

Buuuuut it’s kind of hard to keep disliking a guy as affable as Sans is when you’re exposed to him as constantly as Peridot has been. There’s no major tide-turning moment that she can point to and be like “yup, right there, that’s when we became friends”. It just kind of happened. Now he’s on that shortlist of people who she will put herself in harm's way for. Interfering in that fight in the courtyard was just as much about Sans as it was Lambert, and hearing the Prince refer to Sans as “his” servant really struck a nerve. Because he’s not! He’s the Ringmaster’s warden, and Peridot’s buddy. And she wants him back. I’m pretty sure she wants him to help her with some kind of big wacky invention in the future and she’s not sure how he’s going to do that if he’s all brain washed.

Because the general consensus really is WAIT, CARLY IS HERE?? regarding supervisors. Like, she doesn't get...much if any respect As one, most consider her that anxious tailor who occasionally sets things on fire. Even the few who...Have seen her serious moments don't tend to keep that in mind so BELIEVE ME, PERI IS....ACTUALLY IN THE SAME BOAT AS MOST...
I do look forward to possibly making things slightly more friendly between them tho. WR BOTH HAVE TO PROVE WE'RE COOL PERIDOT...

Anyway, Strange is one of the ONLY people at the carnival that Peridot views as being on the same level as her intellectually, which… trust me, that is HIGH PRAISE. Not an easy level to reach. And she feels this way even though his area of academic expertise is VASTLY different from her own! Strange is bright, enthusiastic, and she knows that there’s a heck of a lot that she can learn from him. Having a friend who knows a lot about magic AND who can keep up with her feverish energy and relentless questioning is invaluable to her. Privately, I think she hopes that one day he might ask her to teach him about mechanics and engineering, so she can give him something just as valuable in return..
I think they need to spend more time together and get to know each other more before they really hit the CLOSE FRIEND zone, but at this point Peridot would still readily go to bat for Strange.

I’ve said this a million goddamn times before now, but IC and OOC, but it always bears repeating: Gems don’t have families. It’s not a thing, at all. Sometimes, depending on the caste and the function and circumstances, gems from the same cut will kind of form little posses on their own, but Peridot was never part of anything like that. It would be a long time, until the day she was forced to choose exile on Earth over going back to her own planet, before she would be forced to acknowledge the powers of friendship and teamwork. And yeah, the Crystal Gems are her family! You can’t discount that.
But. Portland was the first time Peridot really got to experience what family was from a human perspective, and even if it turned out to all be fake in the end, a lot of that has stuck with her in a pretty profound way. Does it really matter if Lambert faking having a horrible stomach illness in a library bathroom in order to protect his werebeast sister never actually happened? They both vaguely remember it, don’t they? And even if a lot of the finer details of their lives in Portland are starting to fade from memory the longer time marches on, there are some things that Peridot knows definitely happened, even if the motivations of each player and the history between them all was fabricated. It was all based off of their real selves, and that has to count for something, right?
By that logic, even though the real Lambert is much more of a prickly jerk than his Portland self was, Peridot feels like she has some kind of insight on him that most other people don’t, whether that’s actually accurate or not. And they definitely went through some shit together there at the end. It would take an extremely significant betrayal of her trust (yes, even more significant than using Axii on her to make her stand down from a fight) to make Peridot turn on Lambert, at this point. Even if she’s kind of embarrassed by a lot of the aspects of the whole ~human family~ situation (just because of how alien it is to her in retrospect), it was an experience that they both shared and came out of being like “well THAT was weird”, and that counts for a lot in it’s own right.
ON THAT NOTE, Lambert is one of the first humans that Peridot has ever felt any particularly strong affection for, which is low-key troubling in a lot of ways because she’s never had to deal with caring so much about someone who’s mortal. Like, she’s kind of hyper aware that even if Lambert actually possessed a lick of a sense of self-preservation and wasn’t constantly putting himself in danger, he would still die eventually anyway, and that’s kind of weird to come to terms with. There’s a reason that gems are often aloof with humans, and it’s because their temporary nature is painful to accept.
Not that she’s constantly worrying about his finite lifespan. No, no… what she’s actually worried about, on a slightly less tragic and much more hilarious note, is how squishy and fragile humans can be. BE NICER TO YOUR BODY? YOU ONLY HAVE ONE OF THOSE-- OK she’s pretty sure Garnet told her that humans aren’t supposed to be able to survive falls like that-- Lambert why are you like this. It’s a good thing Witchers are mutant freaks and sturdier than most folk.
tl;dr She won’t call you “brother” anymore, because that would be weird, but you’re definitely getting called “friend”.
