Crunch

I've gone over this before so we're doing the Canon Part in cliffnotes version, but: Gongenzaka is up there with Yuzu as one of his closest friends. He absolutely didn't have to actually befriend and get close to Yuya because Gon's a protector of the weak in general, but he did, and Yuya's eternally appreciative that Gon stuck by his side. Gongenzaka really met and stood by Yuya at his lowest point, so for Yuya being someone strong is as much for Gon's sake as it is for Yuzu's.

Gon is Yuya's reliable friend that always anchors him when he gets lost in his own excitement, strong in heart as much as body and Yuya really admires him for it. Gon is someone he sees as a noble and good person, who's truly honorable and loyal and strong in conviction and morals and not just muscle.

Yuya's not physically capable right now of protecting Gongenzaka from vampires, angels, fae, other carnival members... It's like Yuya's watching that hypothetical future where Gon was going to need him, and he was going to be strong enough, and it's just kind of falling to pieces in front of him. His view of Gongenzaka as his strongest, unshakable friend has been shaken because of how far he's been brought down, and Yuya holds his failure to be strong enough against himself.

He doesn't and can't expect Gon to just not protect him even if he asked, because he knows how far Gongenzaka will go for him. It's why he's so determined to do the same, because he cares too and he doesn't want to keep being weak and one-sided in their relationship, and the Manor is the final straw. It's a bit unsteady because his thoughts of Gongenzaka are filled with a sort of dread because of how much they love each other, but also his love with his friends is the most important thing in Yuya's world so he's caught between two feelings with his friend.

Girl you're gonna give him a heart attack.

REALLY with Reiji not here and Reira in contract partly because of his own contract, which resulted because she was saving him in the first place, Yuya feels super responsible for her in the Carnival, like, personally. Here comes Team Mom because you're getting out of this safe and alive and if he could get the Ringmaster to cut her contract he would. BUT HE CAN'T.

He really cares a lot about Reira. She's a kid who's been hurt and his how alone and he wants to see her safe and happy. The truth is he doesn't know very much about her, but he knows she's sheltered so step one is teach her all the Good Things In Life. Give her stuff to smile about. Don't talk about Zarc whatsoever and try to keep positive around her for her sake. He wants to be a good big bro kind of figure for her.

He's like already failing step one but can you blame him.

HELLO STRANGE.

Strange is first off 100% Yuya's friend. His adult friend, definitely, as he recognizes Strange is older and has more life experience and generally trusts him like you'd trust your teachers (even if he shouldn't). But also Strange is a big dork, so Yuya doesn't necessarily look up to him, but he's someone very important.

He thinks Strange means well and would definitely do his best if Yuya needed to rely on him. He already has even at risk to himself, so Yuya knows if there's anything he has to go to Strange for he has no hesitations doing so. He's someone who 'love' is also a huge driving force, which Yuya gets and he finds his adoration of his wife endearing.

If he ever has skepticism over Strange's decisions, it's probably because he saw firsthand how far south they can go (the FAE). They end up having to weather bad situations more than just chatting, but Yuya doesn't really feel a schism between them because Strange is just that easy for him to talk to. It's just as easy to teach him to swim as it is to die in a video game together. That Strange is just as enthusiastic also gets Yuya to gravitate towards him.

Of course, Yuya likes to give to his friends as much as he takes. It's a bad situation but he is glad that Strange is going to open up more after they leave the Manor, because Strange is as bad at hiding his emotions as Yuya is and he can tell there's stuff that's been bothering him and hey, Yuya likes to be there for his friends.

Also he definitely appreciates Real Strange over Portland Strange, which is hilarious since Portland was where their big hurdle of CR was crossed. Real Strange just has all the stuff Yuya liked in Portland without being a prejudiced bag of dicks.

Well Yuya likes Rita so that's okay.

Rita's interesting because none of his friends are so tsundere, but he's catching on! He's realizing a lot of Rita's prickliness is defensive and mostly bravado, and deep down he sees a really smart, strong, and caring person. And he admires it a lot, he sees her as a really good person.

But man, she really needs to loosen up. He's got a bit of a goal for himself to try and get her to drop her guard and just have fun, because doesn't it suck to deny and hide things you care about because you're worried how it makes you look? He actually understands her a little better realizing some of her confidence is fake, but he's also learned that hiding behind masks like that isn't really healthy. He doesn't see anything she has to be embarrassed by, so if he can get her to understand that it's a huge win in his book.

And she's holding one of his secrets, so she's definitely a trusted friend. He's really excited to teach her duel monsters and just do friend things.

HEY ROOMIE

Tamaki's like, one of his most normal friendships here because even if he's a total oddball (and really Yuya's not one to talk) he comes from a more familiar background, and that's great! Yuya kind of sees him as an older figure, but not an older brother he'd take advice from or anything. Because Tamaki's advice kind of sucks sometimes, he's like you, but really. But on the other hand, Tamaki helped take care of him after he was stabbed, so there's at least some sense of responsibility there. Tamaki's a friend he could honestly have made back home.

Learning he's an idol and is a lot more similar to Yuya's entertainment background than he thought is a really great bonding point, because they really get well beyond the carnival having an audience--and they're enertainers who have a closer connection to their audience than carnival acts do, since their names are attached and everything.

SURPRISINGLY LITTLE this is probably mostly because Yuya didn't know Portland Lambert very well.

Lambert's on Yuya's list of "adults he really shouldn't trust but, unfortunately, does". Not "tell him about my deep secrets" level of trust, but "got my back" trust and "let's go on an adventure with no consideration for our own safety we'll be Fine" trust. Lambert's rough and rugged, but Yuya does get the impression some of it's bravado--especially after that conversation with Celedine.

He really sees Lambert more as Lambert, and not as Nightrider or a co-worker. He kind of has to remember when there's an actual issue that 'oh, yeah, that's his job'. Even if he teases Yuya a lot, Yuya likes just spending time with him and being friendly and not even talking shop (granted, what are an acrobat and a mercenary going to talk shop about anyway).

Also Lambert is totally the kind of person to enable his reckless shit instead of talking him down, and even if talking him down is the better thing to do u bet he likes that validation for his stupid impulses.

JULIEN HE'S SO DISAPPOINTED.

Truthfully Yuya doesn't know much about him except that he's got a weird bird body and works in wardrobe, he seems like a nice guy and all? Which just makes being angry at him easier, because what the hell. Yuya's very big brotherly to little kids and protective, so that Julien totally failed to keep Reira safe after they were warned about the danger and then roundabout admitted he actively helped her sneak out is so irresponsible to him.

He doesn't hate Julien but Reira's really important to him and he sees her safety to get home as his responsibility so he's like. Not going to want to trust Julien with looking after her or other kids now.

FOSTER, BOY, Foster...

Yuya feels really confused by and also sad for Foster. He's clearly got a lot of problems going on and doesn't like himself at... all... he seems pretty stuck in what's going on with him? Like he has no hope for getting out of it, which is pretty sad considering death was a better option. Yuya doesn't know exactly what's going on, but he doesn't think it's something Foster should have to cope with alone.

That said, he can't make Foster accept his help or anything so whenever his friendliness is rebuffed he just backs off and waits it out. He'd really like to understand, because that's the first part of communicating with and helping someone (or being a friend), but he and Foster come from totally different places and without being explicitly told he doesn't really understand what Foster gets at most of the time at all.

And of course the thing he is really direct about is something that's deeply upsetting to Yuya on a personal level. Foster's a person in Yuya's mind, and he'll never be able to accept that objectification of himself especially with how it reflects on himself and what he's been through.

He really wants to see Foster get support because he does think he has potential to get better (either by wishing it better or just, u know, coping), Yuya always believes in second chances. He's just not having any success himself so mostly he's left being friendly when he sees him and otherwise hoping Foster's got some actual friends here, especially after Portland.

How's it feel being the dumbest countarpart, friend.

Yugo's kind of a weird one, honestly! There's a deep connection between them being two parts of the same soul and all, but Yuya doesn't really know Yugo well at all. He hasn't even directly talked to Yugo since the one time they met in person Yugo fucking ignored him, so he's got little insight on Yugo as a person. He did keep Yuzu safe until the friendship cup, though, and that's major plus points in Yuya's book that he's not all that bad.

LC's really his chance to get to know Yugo better, and Yuya's finding he's a really brash and big-hearted person (and big-stomached) even by his standards, but at the same time those are just stronger versions of Yuya himself so he doesn't actually disagree with Yugo so much as "maybe stop and think".

Like really stop and think, this is twice he's had to intervene you trying to kill someone.

In general though he likes Yugo! It's definitely an improvement from 'fusion scum' and he'd like to get to actually know him well, because especially after all his talking with Yuto that feels like a thing he should do (they'll figure out what to do with Yuri later).
