What's the most embarrassing thing you've ever done?

I don't think there's anything more embarrassing than falling in love, so I'll have to go with that.

[periphrasing]

[ Peridot makes a face. ]

What the heck is so embarrassing about that? Don't humans do that sort of thing like, all the time?

[atouts]

Not as much as you think. Originally, I was planning to marry out of convenience, not out of love.

[periphrasing]

[ Peridot goes absolutely wide-eyed. ]

Wait wait wait. Does that mean... You and Lambert... [ She holds a hand up to cup her mouth and whispers the last part: ] Are you going to get married?

[atouts]

No, Peridot. It just means I won't be marrying anyone at all.

[periphrasing]

...Oh.

[ She looks vaguely perplexed and a little bit disappointed for a moment, but then shrugs it off. The disappointment gets an immediate explanation: ]

Amethyst told me that when she went home a few weeks ago, she found out that our friends Ruby and Sapphire got married. We don't have marriage on Homeworld, so I was kind of hoping I'd get observe the ritual first-hand at some point... But ever since I joined the carnival, the closest I've gotten to that has been watching the Prince trying to marry the Ringmaster! Which is confusing! Every bit of human media that I've ever consumed has made it seem like you humans are just marrying each other all the time.

[atouts]

[ observing a marriage for what? science? really, Peridot... well whatever, he just shrugs. ]

Marrying Lambert wouldn't do much good. I don't have much for him to inherit should I die and even then, no one in England would honor it. [ 1800s sure are a... fun time... yeah. ] Besides, can you really see either of us putting up with such a fuss?

[ Look, she likes to learn about different Earth rituals OK? She's the curious type. ]

Eh? I thought humans married each other because they 'love each other' or whatever.

[ Which probably says a whole hell of a lot about the kind of Earth that Peridot is most familiar with, and the kind of media she consumes. Good old gay af Beach City. ]

That last point makes sense, though. I'd say Lambert might at least appreciate an occasion to get drunk for, but, if my previous observations of his behavior indicate anything, he doesn't need much of an excuse to do that.

Men can't marry other men on my Earth. [ or more like in his own time but whatever the distant future holds, he doesn't expect to see it. ] So that we love each other doesn't matter.

[ and that's pretty much it. he doesn't sound too upset about it (aka not at all because it's Childermass). ]

Though you have the right of it. He's never needed an excuse for that.

[ Childermass might want to get on asking her truth or dare again if he doesn't want to waste a chunk of his time explaining inequality in the institution of marriage to a space alien who has almost zero understanding of human gender and sexuality norms. ]

[ yyyyeah, this is one of those things Childermass is not equipped to explain at all, so he just shrugs. ]

I wouldn't be the one to ask. [ ANYWAY. ] I believe it's your turn again. Truth or dare?

[periphrasing]
