⇨ TEST DRIVE MEME #1

WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

Or, more specifically, Lost Carnival's first test drive meme! This is an opportunity to try out your characters in the setting before you apply, or to put together samples for characters you've never played before. There are going to be options for both new arrivals and veteran characters. Before we get started, let's lay down some details:
  • You can read the full premise here.
  • Reserves open October 5th at 12:01AM EST.
  • Applications open October 7th at 12:01AM EST.
  • You can apply as a newcomer or as a "veteran" character who has been in the carnival for up to three years.
  • TDM threads can be used as game canon after the fact if both characters are accepted and the players agree to it.
  • If you are interested in additional IC and OOC plot responsibilities, consider applying for a Supervisor position.
  • Supervisor applications will start being processed a few days after apps open, and will be selected on a competitive basis. If you want a supervisor position, it is best to submit your application as close to the beginning of the application cycle as possible. If you don't get chosen for your desired supervisor position, you will be given time to rework your application to be a regular veteran, or to apply for a supervisor position that is not yet taken.
  • Lost Carnival could use some additional moderation assistance! If you are interested, please let us know here.

NEW RECRUITS

You gotta start somewhere, right? These prompts are for characters who are arriving in the carnival for the first time, and who are destined to sign a contract. How they go about that is up to you, but in the meantime they can enjoy the sights and sounds of something truly out of this world. Visitors to the carnival comes from many different worlds today, as the ringmaster casts out her recruitment lures. Will you become her most recent hire?

ADMISSION FEES: After crossing into the carnival's realm and passing through the trees, most visitors will find themselves at the front gate - though not all choose to enter that way. If they enter legitimately, however, they will have to pass by a clerk who will trade admission and tickets for various attractions and rides in exchange for "anything of value." What is of value may seem highly subjective, and so some may struggle to produce payment at first, though in actuality the carnival will take anything from mundane currency to items of purely sentimental value.

MIRROR MAZE: The mirror maze (pictured above) is a big attraction in the carnival, and stretches much further on the inside than it looks like it will on the outside. It's hard to get through, and what's more, after you've been in there for a while your reflections will start gaining a mind of their own - mostly in order to taunt and distract you with personal information. They don't know everything you know, but they know more than they should, and their mind games can be pretty hit or miss.

GAMER'S CIRCLE: Almost all of the game booths are organized in a large ring around the Cookhouse, called Gamer's Circle. Your can play just about any carnival game you can imagine here, for a variety of prizes sometimes traditional, exotic, or outright magical. Dart tossing? Got it. That game with the water guns? Got it. Most of these booths are currently manned by humanoid spirits who look like they are made of smoke. If they can trick you into earning debt, they will.

TRYING TO LEAF: No matter where you came from, you seemingly emerged from a forest. Obviously, to get back home you should be able to go back in the same direction, right? It turns out you can't. Worse, trying too hard to get through the wood will result in you getting lost, or turned back to the carnival. The trees here are not normal, and are varying levels of alien, including things like trees with glowing fruit or orange flowers that constantly burn like candles.

NOT YOUR WHEELHOUSE (NEW): Sometimes, even magical ferris wheels get stuck. The carnival's particular wheel is enchanted to create a particular out of this world experience - as you pass along the top, you feel as if they are so close to the sky that you can interact with the stars like baubles hanging above your head. Of course, the novelty probably wears off when the wheel is broken and you've been stuck enjoying the light show with some stranger for the last half hour. How are you going to pass the time?

WILD CARD: Anything else you can imagine in this setting! There are a lot of possibilities and you're free to explore them. Check out the rest of the game info or the locations page for additional inspiration. Want to make a starter with your character experiencing their first theoretical change? Go for it!

VETERAN WORKERS

These prompts are tailored to the carnival's existing employees, the veterans. Odds are they've been here from somewhere between a few months and three years already, and know their way around the block. For them, this is just business as usual - and depending on their attitude towards their job, they may or may not contribute to a few people accidentally getting themselves a contract. Whatever you do, though, don't warn visitors away from the carnival - the ringmaster hates losing business like that.

DO YOUR WORK: This one's pretty simple - just have your character doing whatever you'd like to have their job be! There is a big list of ideas over here, and you could use this to try things out with a character you intend to be a new arrival, as well.

WILL O' WISPS: The ringmaster's will o' wisps have gotten free, and she's asked that everyone keep and eye out and help her reclaim them regardless of their official jobs. Wisps are small creatures that burn both hot and cold and comes in a few different variations of the same basic theme. Handling them physically (or psionically, or magically, for that matter) is difficult due to their near intangible nature. Touching and being around them can result in confusion and a sensation similar to being comfortably drunk.

BREAK TIME: Whatever you were doing, it's break time! It's time for you to relax however you see fit. Do you enjoy some of the carnival attractions yourself, or is that old by now? Do you hang out in the Cookhouse to get a snack? Do you take a nap? Yolo, baby!

RIDDLE GAME: For a bit of fun, the ringmaster has left a variety of locked chests around the worker areas of the carnival, each with instructions and a riddle written on their lids. The chest will accept three guesses from each worker before refusing to respond to them any further. If you guess the right answer, the chest will open and you will be rewarded with some manner of fun magical knick knack. If you've run out of guesses, maybe you can conspire with someone else and promise to split the prize?

WILD CARD: Anything else you can imagine in this setting! There are a lot of possibilities and you're free to explore them. Check out the rest of the game info or the locations page for additional inspiration. Want to do a performance? Hang out in the Backyard? Choose whatever appeals!

[Eh? He knows that voice...

Tamaki stops shoveling food into his black hole of a mouth long enough to look back over at the counter. Ah, so Mitsuki is here... this must not be a bad place if the other members are here.]

Mikki... you're no fun. [He huffs, but takes slower bites.] What are you doing over there?
otokogi: (yes i am yes i am yes i am)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Neither is being sick at a carnival, you know.

[ Mitsuki sets the bowl aside and comes up to the counter. He's not sure if he should tell Tamaki the real story, but maybe it'll make him understand that actions have consequences. ]

Something happened when I was in the fun house and one of the mirrors got cracked. When I came out the attendant just told me to come over here to talk to someone about paying for it, but instead of sending me to a manager, they stuck me in here! I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding.

[ He glances behind Tamaki but there's no sign of anybody else, which seems unusual. ]

Tamaki, are you here alone?
puddingemote: (i been sleepin here instead)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You broke a mirror?

[Tamaki is so amused by that idea that he actually has to stop to laugh a bit at it. Mitsuki is always saying that he's a responsible adult, but he broke something? That's hilarious! And it can't take that long to pay off a mirror, right?

But at the question, he looks around like he expects someone to materialize, before looking back at Mitsuki.]

Yeah. So what?
otokogi: (then he broke that mold)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-08 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say that!

[ It's true but he didn't say it so stop implying things, sheesh. He has reputation to uphold; Sougo's the one who breaks things. Most of the time, anyway. And Mitsuki doesn't think it'll take that long either but there is that whole seven years of bad luck thing.

Mitsuki looks past Tamaki when he starts to look around. He's not sure who else might be here either, after all. ]

Nothing, I was just asking. ... Wait. Why are you alone?
puddingemote: (with me)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
[He didn't have to say it, it was the only conclusion. Though Tamaki would definitely agree that Sougo is the one who breaks things, especially if you give him a weapon (which, in Tamaki's opinion, you should never do).]

Because I walked out here by myself.

[Unfortunately, if Mitsuki wants to know why he walked out here by himself, he'll have to ask more questions. Tamaki still isn't any better at explaining things.]

Are you alone, Mikki?
otokogi: (be a king when kingdom comes)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Nobody is allowed to arm Sougo. How he even keeps getting his hands on things is beyond Mitsuki; at least in his own case, it's his body that's the weapon. ]

Yeah, but why? I'm sure somebody would've gone with you. And... yeah...

[ It's different! Don't ask too much, Tamaki. ]
puddingemote: (so show me family)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, that's not a good tone... is Mitsuki alright?]

I ran away for awhile. Didn't want to talk to Sou-chan.

[That's right, Sougo and Tamaki are fighting. Again.

He gets up from the table and comes to lean on the counter, carrying his funnel cake with him.]

Now we're not alone.
otokogi: (go ahead and tell everybody)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ohhhhhhhhh. That explains that, then. If Tamaki hangs around for a bit Mitsuki might try to get to the bottom of it but right now it feels very live and let live, or at least let live. Tamaki's not the type to go digging.

It might be because he's as intuitive as he is, though. Mitsuki smiles and nods when Tamaki comes to lean on the counter. ]

No, I guess not! Have you gotten a chance to see much of the carnival yet? I haven't been to one like this before but when I get out of here, maybe we could go around together.
puddingemote: (i been sleepin here instead)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I came for the food first. This is good! But not as good as your cakes.

[He takes another bite before continuing.]

But if you get out of here, we can play games! And ride rides! And see the show!

[He's getting more excited as he talks, like a little kid. It's probably not surprising that he's never gotten to do anything like this before.]
otokogi: (yes i am yes i am yes i am)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-10 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, of course not! This isn't my recipe and who know how old this oil is.

[ Mitsuki does take a precautionary glance behind himself to check if the actual operator of the booth is there but seeing as they're not he just preens a little. ]

I don't know how long I have to stay in here, but I think I'll just get this batch out of the fryer and then we can go on! That should be more than enough considering I don't work here, right?

[ Plus Tamaki's enthusiasm is charming and infectious, and Mitsuki's aniki instincts are kicking in. He wants to make sure Tamaki gets a chance to do as much here as possible! ]
puddingemote: (you're my)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-10 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! Hurry Mikki!

[He's going to cram the rest of his funnel cake down his throat before they leave, though (so much for not eating fast! Mitsuki probably shouldn't take him on anything that spins, just in case). He's excited to get to have fun at the carnival, and Mitsuki isn't someone he gets to hang out with as often.

Plus, it will be a nice distraction from his fight with Sougo, and will hopefully cheer Mitsuki up!]

I'm almost out of Ousama Pudding stickers though... Mikki, pay for me, okay?
otokogi: (i'm the man i'm the man i'm the man)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-10 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Mitsuki makes a little sound of protest but by the time he's ready to say anything, the funnel cake is already gone. Tamaki...

Instead of scolding him since it's too late to do any good, Mitsuki turns and hauls the last batch of funnel cakes out of the fryer. They look perfect, gold and gleaming, and whenever the actual proprietor of this booth comes back, they should be satisfied. That means Mitsuki's taking the apron off to get out of here. ]

You've been paying with stickers? I'll see what I can do, I've got some money left still but we can't go overboard. Where do you want to go first?
puddingemote: (with you)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-10 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because they're "of value."

[The funnel cakes that Mitsuki takes out look and smell delicious, and Tamaki almost wants another one. But the prospect of going and having fun in other parts of the carnival distracts him from the cakes (and he'll probably want something salty eventually, anyway).]

Let's go see the show!
otokogi: (well you can tell everybody)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-10 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He's not saying a word about the relative value of Ousama Pudding stickers. He knows better than that. It just seems almost mean, that people would rather take Tamaki's stickers than his money because he cares about those more. What kind of place is this? ]

Oooh, good idea! I wonder what kind of music they'll have! And costumes, too.
puddingemote: (i been livin a lonely life)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-10 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Clearly not a good place. Tamaki is glad he'll get to hang on to the last of his stickers, though.]

Yeah. If it's fun, maybe we can do a circus-themed show...

[Ah, right, but he said he was quitting...]
otokogi: (stand up now and face the sun)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-10 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be fun! Riku could be the ring master, Iori could be a magician because their suits look good on him... You'd make a good strong man, Tamaki! Or mezzo" could do something together, like a trapeze act. You'd have to talk to Sougo again, though.

[ Mitsuki doesn't necessarily intend to try to fix things between the two of them but he does know that whatever happened, it's not exclusively either of their faults. It never is.

Plus he thinks the sight of guys like Sougo and Tamaki flying through the air and catching each other would have audiences screaming, provided Sougo didn't give himself a heart attack. It'd all be wires anyway. ]

What kind of thing would you want to do?
puddingemote: (i don't know where i went wrong)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-10 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[That all sounded really fun until Mitsuki brought up Sougo and MEZZO" again. Tamaki makes a face like he's a little put out.]

I wanna do that... the swing thing.

[Though he's not sure it's something Sougo should try, because of his stomach...]

Doesn't have to be with Sou-chan, though. [So there.]

What do you want to do, Mikki?
Edited (wow I misread that lmao) 2016-10-10 19:10 (UTC)
otokogi: (yes i am yes i am yes i am)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-10 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Mmm, Mitsuki thought that might happen. Testing the waters does mean making ripples! For now, though, he'll leave it. Moderating between these two is really more Yamato's specialty anyway. ]

You're right! Hmm... Actually, I might have fun doing the trapeze with you, Tamaki! I'm light so you'd be able to catch me but I'm strong too so maybe I could catch you!

[ Mitsuki tucks his hands in his pockets and looks up at the lights around them, thinking. ]

If not that then maybe a clown. They make a lot of people smile.
puddingemote: (i been sleepin in my bed)

[personal profile] puddingemote 2016-10-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Ryuunosuke, of all people, has already moderated between them a bit. It's not like Tamaki hates Sougo (he never has), but things are... complicated.]

Could you really catch me? [That would be pretty impressive. Mitsuki is small, but Tamaki has witnessed his strength, so it's entirely possible he could.]

You're good at making people smile. Maybe you could be the ring master though? Is that like MCing?
otokogi: (be a king when kingdom comes)

[personal profile] otokogi 2016-10-11 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ Most things among the idols are complicated. Mitsuki would hardly classify his relationship with Yamato as simple, for example. That being said, mezzo" almost certainly has the most complicated relationship, and it's important to stay aware of that.

Or to swerve away from it altogether. ]

With practice, sure! It'd all be wirework anyway, there's no way the President would let us really be trapeze artists, so it'd be easier.

And maybe, but then what would Riku do? He's our center, he should be the one in charge like that, shouldn't he?

[ In truth Mitsuki would love a job like that but he's feeling insecure in the spotlight lately, so it's hard to step up and lay claim to it, even if Tamaki's right about it being right up his alley. ]
