This one is sort of hard to describe. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that both of them tend to shut themselves off from outside fussing and also compartmentalize their emotions in a similar way, which means that... all of their interactions are oddly frank? Like they exist in this nexus where nobody is expected to have a massive emotional reaction to anything, which makes it okay to discuss topics which would otherwise be kept aside as to not upset anyone.

Lambert is neither disinterested or cold towards stories of suffering, but he also isn't a massive bleeding heart who will make a big deal about it, which Sans has managed to use to allow himself to tell Lambert a bunch of shit he wouldn't want to get into with many others. He doesn't feel like he's going to end up making Lambert feel awkward or sad for him as a result of anything he says, so therefore he can allow himself to be cynical or angry about something without it rocking the boat and making everything a big production.

Of course, Lambert also isn't some kind of unfeeling sociopath, and is in fact really angry sometimes, which is something Sans can relate to. Anger is something that Sans has spent a lot of time keeping on heavy lockdown inside of him, and so hanging out with someone whose primary emotion is "angry" is kind of a riot for him. It's the perfect opportunity to bitch without anybody worry trolling him about it.

It also helps that some of the first times Lambert met Sans it was during intense mind controlled combat, and therefore seeing Sans at his worst. There was really nowhere to go but up from there, which was oddly liberating. Lambert hadn't really balked at it, so there's a whole bunch of secrecy out of the way. So, he's super fucked up inside, what else is new?

He also likes that Lambert gets along with Papyrus because it feels like understanding Papyrus is like understanding his other half. Knowing that Lambert can both appreciate Sans's personality and Papyrus's is comforting somehow. It gets an unspoken mark of approval.

Since they've been working together, Sans has started to allow himself to lean on Lambert more in a professional manner, which is gradually translating into personal trust as well. They've just had some crazy fucked up shit happen, and it creates a rapport. Neither of them are people that are very good at being known, so robbing each other of a lot of the mystery of each other's angst by wacko shit occurring somehow saves a lot of time.
