Steven is one of the few people who Strange sees as a kid, unlike how he sees some of the other younger carnival members (Rita & Susan are magicians, 9S is a coworker, etc.) Which is interesting, because this means he'll actually think through his actions and conversations with Steven more than other carnival members, doing things like trying to comfort him in the pre-manor radio post or trying to distract the conversation from Portland's everything when they were in the Summerlands. One of the things that Strange is just AMAZINGLY self-conscious about is the fact that he doesn't want to turn into his father, who was the literal worst and was terrible with children. The fact that Strange thinks of Steven as a kid means that he cares what Steven thinks about him and is trying his hardest to work his way through their conversations so he doesn't torpedo it and so Steven thinks that he's not a garbage fire of a human being.
He also cares more about what Steven thinks about him because heeeeey, who has two thumbs and lingering guilt over trying to kidnap him in Portland, it's Strange.
Anyway, this is Jonathan Strange we're talking about and he can mess something up just by breathing, so for all of his 'trying to think things through' and 'trying to be a decent adult to Steven' like half the time it's gonna fall flat.
