Sans can't claim to know Childermass very well, but he also doesn't expect that many people do. Childermass is the quintessential straight man to basically every other person in the carnival, it seems, and he's one of the only people Sans would place a bet on keeping their cool in a difficult situation. He respects Childermass's way of being even if it leaves him curious as to what the internal motivators are. There's a difference between feigning unflappability and actually being unflappable and honestly most of the time he gets the impression that it's genuinely the latter.

He's glad to see him as a fellow supervisor both because he seems to know what he's doing and also because it thinks he'd be an interesting person to spend more time with. Their personalities aren't actually that different, even if their outward presentations are. Childermass seems more street than Strange which is something he appreciates as well.
