1) scary as fuck dude, ruined his life in another version of reality, still remembers getting totally owned by this guy.
2) after Childermass turned around to try to help him, Steven was eager to see the humanity in a person who had represented nothing but terror before. This also continues into real carnival life, where he knows that Childermass didn't choose what happened to him in Portland, so he extra doesn't want to blame him for circumstances he has no control over.
3) this means that in reaction to his own fear Steven has basically tried to hyper sympathize with Childermass, and now sees him as a lone peer in the club of being faeblooded - a peer that he didn't have the advantage of when growing up as a half-gem. Childermass's presence still sets him on edge due to what is essentially lurking PTSD but at the same time there are things that Childermass may understand that no one else could.
4) he also thinks his love for Baker must mean that Childermass is actually, at heart, an excellent guy, as he is ever the optimist.
5) in seeking out reasons to relate to and understand Childermass, Steven is also coming to admire certain aspects of his personality, translating his aloofness to a general air of attractive mystery and basically viewing him as some sort of dark and brooding fantasy character more than just a coworker/superior. Looking at Childermass as a tragic hero is a lot more appealing than viewing him as someone who once hurt him very badly.
6) in summary, Steven has been aggressively trying to conquer his own fears by focusing exclusively on the positive aspects of Childermass, rather than the bad stuff that scares him and may or may not be legitimate.
