so that last encounter could’ve gone better

Soooooooooo Rita's kind of maybe the most important person to 9S in the Carnival. Not really necessarily because of anything Rita in particular has done (though that helps, I'll get to that later), but by virtue of being his roommate. Just like how he latched on to 2B very quickly because she was his first partner down on Earth and he's just that desperate for company, he's latched on to Rita in a similar way. It's not nearly as extreme as his feelings for 2B, since there are actually other people he spends time with around in the Carnival, but its still pretty strong.

Add on to the fact that Rita's smart, interested in technology, and has a similarly inquisitive and curious mind and 9S' opinion of her shot up tenfold, even if she is a slob. Rita telling him about the looming destruction of her world, as well as her aim to make it right by sacrificing her magic technology and start fresh was honestly the nail in the coffin. There is literally no one else 9S admires more than Rita right now. Just like, wow, this is why he loves humans so much. This girl right here.

He meant everything he said during the ball. He does consider her special, and he does like her. ...He just likes her in a different way to 2B. So he doesn't quite understand why she's so angry at him for ditching her during their dance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
