Strange is also one of 9S' favourite people in the Carnival; he's very patient in answering 9S' questions, but also the way he set boundaries on what he is and willing to talk about was smart. Rather than outright saying no to 9S re: talking about his family, Strange had offered alternative topics, which is a pretty good way to keep 9S from prying into things you don't want him to. Plus, his efforts in helping the Carnival prepare for their trip to the manor, as well as his continued help, didn't go unnoticed by 9S. Like, wow. What a nice guy!

On top of that, 9S really likes Strange's bombastic way of showing off, and he's just that but casual and silly enough that 9S can't help but feel relaxed around him. He worries a little about the uh, lack of self-preservation, but after hearing about what he tried to do for Arabella... 9S feels he understands Strange a little better. Both of them are the same, in that way; they're both so deeply in love with their significant other and would sacrifice everything of themselves for them.

what the heckie is up with this guy anyway

9S kind of both does and doesn't understand Cole, and treats the parts he doesn't understand (the weird esoteric spirit nonsense) as a puzzle he wants to dissect and analyse. He has absolutely no doubt that with more exposure to Cole, he'll be able to figure it all out. The part he does understand (so far) is loneliness and wanting to find answers to the distance placed between friends. When it comes to hurt, pain, and trying to understand the nature of life and living, he gets that. For 9S, it's kind of nice having someone who's struggling with it, too, because it means he isn't alone in that sense. In a way, Cole reminds him a little bit of androids, and that makes 9S both feel a bit less alone and miss home terribly.
