Steven is a weird case since Childermass is seriously not someone who interacts too often with children, apart from the few he paid to hand off letters to him or to keep on eye on people or places for him. Obviously, that's had to change since joining the carnival, but even then, he isn't particularly close to any that work here, even if he doesn't mind the company of them at this point.

Which brings us to Steven, who, quite honestly, makes him about as uncomfortable as he himself makes Steven. Even though what happened was the Portland version of him who did it, as the command of a seriously awful faerie, kidnapping has never been a crime he has ever sunk to. He's stolen, he's broken into homes, he's driven people out of London or at least frightened them into laying low, but he doesn't hurt people. Portland him did that a lot more and having to see Steven struggle with his presence whenever they're in the same room is difficult, even for Childermass.

That he's made the effort to try and get past it on his own, though, means Childermass won't outright avoid him. He also won't offer him any pity for his troubles, since he offers no one pity, and while Steven might disagree with him on the definition of pity, he's still sure enough that the lad would prefer not to be treated like an invalid. So, he won't treat him that way, even if he will protect him — and, if he was to be entirely honest with Steven, the safeguard he bought him in the Summerlands happened in part to how the Rose Queen offered a similar threat to Strange, even if that's in the form of Nightshade rather than the Queen herself.

In any case, he's not sure how to react to any bonding over both of them finding themselves fae-blooded, though, since Steven does have the advantage of already having not been fully human before. His own woe stems from feeling he's been robbed of his humanity rather than having grown up differently, but whether that's something they ever discuss, well, maybe someday.

There's always fire involved!

So hey, Childermass! He can be kind of a calming presence for Rita, which is great because Rita has a distinct lack of chill. She has some level of respect for him, as he has a good amount of common sense and manages not to get on her nerves too much. And hey, he was a pretty decent roommate, for an old man. He respects her space and even offers to help her out sometimes, which means something even when she's too stubborn to accept.

Recently, after meeting his soul-crow in Greysol, Rita got to realize that he isn't nearly as put-together as he acts most of the time. So, in a way, seeing that some shit actually does get to him made him seem a little more relatable. Of course, Rita's embarrassed to be seen looking like cares about people's feelings or anything, but in the end, she does care if he's holding up or if he's just pushing his problems away and ignoring them.

ALSO despite all her griping, she doesn't hate Baker that much, really.

Rita's only had a few encounters with Tamaki so far, and for the most part, he's just been really chill around her. Unfortunately, he's chill in a way that sometimes just makes her annoyed, like why are you being friendly and pleasant, everything is AWFUL and I'm here to YELL AND ARGUE, jerk.

She also hates his nickname for her but is hypocritically more okay with his names for other people because even though they're SUPER DUMB it's fine if others are embarrassed. Just not her.

Also that "he was a ghost" thing is totally weird and creepy, but fortunately Rita realizes it's not really something that should define him. So currently, she's still forming an opinion on him and is open to having said opinion influenced strongly in their present/future interactions!

There's a part of Rita that still sees Steven as a fascinating specimen to be researched (gems are really cool from a magic-scientific standpoint!!!), but in Portland, she gained some reasons to actually care about him as a person. Even though neither of them are really the people they were back there, it's hard not to have some feelings carried over, including feelings of guilt (from not helping him back in the Rose Queen's domain), but also of camaraderie and compassion from the horrible things they faced together as changelings.

They haven't talked much since then (but they should!) so she hasn't had much of a chance to have her views evolve beyond seeing him as Portland-Steven. Since his fears about the servants in Heartstone turned out to be well-founded, she'll probably be quicker to back him in wanting to help those enslaved by the fae, going forward. Rita tries to act detached and pragmatic, but when actually faced with someone suffering, she can't hold back.

he loves being the 3rd option. so good.

lauren is not the brightest crayon in the box and this is pretty obvious in that his opinion of carly is "nice, but dumb." OR ACTUALLY it would be more accurate to say "nice but WRONG" he disagrees with basically everything she says and they seem to be the kind of friends who argue casually a lot instead of having a normal conversation. carly pokes fun of him and he doesn't mind it. lauren actually is honest around carly, which is a super rare thing for him! more often than not he will actually just say what he's thinking instead of pausing and thinking fro an entire minute about how to word things first. and carly doesnt actually judge him for this or like him any less for it which he personally thinks is really cool.

he's also lately started to realize she might actually be right about the way he handles things being not great. he might try to talk to her about that at one point but she seems to sort of be having her own issues and also he is concerned but kind of afraid and should he ask or will she get mad and decide they aren't friends? he doesn't know!

also shes older than him, and therefore probably thinks of him as some dumb kid, he is insecure about that.

also she's kind of hot so help.

HE IS SO MAD THAT YOU CALLED THE COPS ON HIM BRO. He's not even really mad at Reira? He totally 100% blames the prince for this, but still COME ON! He was trying to help you you GOOBER. As far as Lauren's normal feelings about Reira go he thinks she's kind of amazing. She learns things quick, she's intuitive (psychically so hurrhurr), she's CURIOUS. He loves all of those things about her! One not so secret thing about Lauren is that he's kind of the mothering type. He enjoys looking after other people, taking care of them, watching them learn and grow. i don't even really think it's something he even knows about himself, but reira being a kid and also just naturally inquisitive kicks his mothering instinct into high gear. he wants to be her friend, but he also wants to look out for her and protect her like he does with susan.

and maybe it's weird for a teenager nearly adult kid to want to be friends with or "mother" someone so much younger than him (and on the other side not nearly younger enough) but this is the guy who's best friend is his own 13 yo brother, so. SHRUG. he's a weirdo, he's kind of accepted that fact about himself. also its just easy for him to be himself around kids, because they don't really EXPECT anything from kids. like if you act weird around kids they just go "your weird" and shrug it off because that's how they are. so its just like easy for him to converse with her. and yeah he thinks shes really cute also, like cute in a LITTLE KID WAY to be clear obvs, but yeah. I'm looking forward to seeing this cr growing.

Yuya is someone that Rita can always trust to have his heart in the right place. Even when she clashes with him, she can't bring herself to dislike him, because she knows he's coming from a place of genuine good will. Of course, sometimes she worries that his good will stretches too far for his own good (like in the case of his self-sacrificing stunt in Portland, or his open-minded approach to friendship with fae). She doesn't want to say it, but she cares about him, and she doesn't want him getting hurt.

While Yuya might worry that Rita's trying too hard to act tough around him (and he's not wrong), she's probably more relaxed around him than she is around most people. Problem is, that's still not totally relaxed, as she always tries to have some sort of guard up.

In a way, Rita's always been a child living and working among adults, and there's always been pressure to be an adult herself, to avoid anything childish, to be someone who will be taken seriously. One of the results of that is that she doesn't know how to act around people her age. When she first met Yuya, she talked down to him, treated him like a "kid", and generally acted like he was beneath her. He's earned her respect since, and now she even cares about what he thinks of her... but she isn't really sure how to approach this whole "friends her age" thing. Hell, friends in general are still a new thing for her.

However, there's been some progress, and she's slowly becoming more willing to try new things around him, or actually talk to him about herself. So good job Yuya, you are cracking the tsun layer and bringing out some of the dere.

BET YOU THOUGHT I FORGOT because oops this is late BUT HERE GOES

Even among mages, Rita has spent her life being treated like a freak for her obsession with magic, and Strange is perhaps the first person she’s met who’s something of a kindred spirit when it comes to sheer passion for magic. He's the closest thing to a rival she's ever had, too, as they both seem to consider themselves the #1 magic expert in the carnival. It's nice, though. Rita didn't have many peers back home who challenged and surprised her like Strange does.

Of course, there is a part of her that sees him as an idiot and looks down on his imprecise, unscientific approach to magic, but the fact that his techniques work inspires curiosity in her, and she can’t quite dismiss his boneheaded ways. Strange can be a source of encouragement for her, and while she tries not to act too friendly as a rule, she values his input more than she’d admit. He's the first person she'll be going to for opinions on her book-in-progress.

Magic aside, Strange can be pretty annoying and weird at times, although most of the things Rita dislikes about him (his ridiculous ego, wordiness, sentimentality) are all qualities she's guilty of possessing in some measure herself. She even trusts him for the most part (as she's grown certain he's completely unlike his Portland counterpart).

She still thinks dancing and courtly manners are garbage, though, sorry.

TAMAKI is probably one of Miko's better friends in the carnival, and she's honestly really glad he's here?? Like, hell yeah, she wouldn't be able to survive some of this crap if there weren't other teenagers around to just... hang out and do teenager things with. In some ways Tamaki really reminds her of her friend Jack from home, but like... less boring tbh, and also cuter. She does wish he were more up to do cool stuff and not just sleep all the time, but you know what she's glad he's around!

Even though they haven't spoken in a while Miko would honestly really like to talk to Papyrus again; so far as she can tell he seems like a COOL GUY who would be good to talk to more. The skeleton thing is a little weird but you know what she's seen way too much shit at this point not to get over that pretty quickly.

...She may have some questions though. About like.... how that works. How he eats. And so on.

she's not only hot she's dated like two people younger than her so hey Lauren hey

I like that they can disagree on the relative regular without going at each other's throats, honestly. It's a little more healthy than just deciding to dislike the other for it, and I like that they can both have that attitude about the other. Carly has a bad habit of falling for morons, but the fact that Lauren has heart despite the awkward level of sticking to himself and Susan makes her see him as a good person regardless-which....well hey, FRIENDS. More than friends??? Mystery.

Maybe if he's lucky he'll find out about her talk with Susan and realize that chats of dire importance don't ruin that, necessarily. She definitely doesn't think he's a dumb kid at least. (Heck you're basically just a year younger than Jack so-)

Awwwwwwwwww. Well in this case he's not wrong at least, since she was Totally Brainwashed.

Reira's 'best friends' are all a pile of teenagers anyway (INCLUDING SUSAN I GUESS), so hey, you're weird, she's weird, she's fine with it! She prefers when people don't treat her obviously like a kid-though to be fair, she doesn't actually know what that entails, so Lauren hasn't actually triggered that dislike. Go Figure.

SO HECK YEAH GROWING CR let's do it

OH BOY so as one might expect Miko's feelings regarding Lambert are COMPLICATED because... lingering sibling feels?? Which she doesn't really know what to do with because Miko is used to be an only child, so this is. Entirely new.

ON TOP OF THAT of course their interactions are pretty different in the carnival?? And frankly Miko appreciates that regular Lambert is not as ""uptight"" (responsible) as Portland Lambert, regular Lambert is way more fun.

ANYWAY OVERALL he seems like a cool guy and she def wants to get to know him better?? And maybe if they talk more she'll be able to sort out whether to think of this guy as her brother or not 8T

nope i'm gonna do it, i'm gonna do the thing, i've just been slow

Rita is one of those people who happens to be really, really easy to poke fun at, though when Childermass does so, there's a fifty to sixty percent chance that he's doing that at all may fly over her head with how dry he is with his sense of humor. Which is to say, he thinks she's a little silly when it comes to that temper of hers, but beyond that? She's obviously very intelligent and he could only hope that all the future young magicians in his own world have even an ounce of her determination.

He may not chat with her about magic as much as Strange does, but he doesn't mind listening to her ramble and rant on about it on her own, and he does like her enough to be completely honest in his offers to help her. If she can ever get over her pride long enough to accept that help, well, now that's another story, isn't it? And he supposes he'll find out someday.

Gosh, this is such a thoughtful response! I keep coming back and wanting to respond in detail but I'm always stopping to say, wow. /whistles

Having there be a lot of similarities and great contrast has been a whole lot of fun. I'm glad Lambert can tell Scout's kinda posturing and presenting herself as someone she's not really.

I AM LIKE, THE SLOWEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD, I feel like I'm always saying this to you and I probably don't even need to point it out bc I just keep on chronically starting threads and then just not finishing them, case and point, I'm only just getting around to responding to CR meme stuff but. I'm looking at this and looking at the current stuff we're working on and it's giving me an emotion?

My biggest CR goal is to get Peridot to a point where she can argue w/ Strange about magical theory. SOMEDAY.
