Now that you've had a week to plan, this is the official role call post for the AU. Please reply to whatever header your character is included in with a summary of their role in Portland, with your character's name in the post subject. You can just copy and paste summaries used in the plotting post if you like, though for the same of mod plotting I would ask that you name and bold any of the following in your descriptions:
Organizations: If your character is in a group or organization of any kind, please bold it! This will be important for the dispensing of IC clues and NPC attention.
NPC Connections: If your character has a powerful NPC of any kind that they are connection to, please list and bold them. The mods will be writing some of these NPCs into the metaplot, and we can't do that if we don't know they exist!
Meetup Points: If your character runs or is affiliated with anything that could be considered a supernatural hangout, it would be useful to make them easy to find, for the sakes of people who want to know what kind of places will be available in Portland for their characters to hang out.
Confirming your concepts in this post is not mandatory, but I would super appreciate anyone who does. If you do not reply to this post, your character will not be tied into the metaplot. Additionally, I will give everyone who does reply a +2 AC point bonus to their next activity check, per character they reply with.
Various angelic beings, stranded from heaven. It's helpful to indicate what the angel's given duty is in your description. (That is, spirit guide, guardian, warrior, etc.)
Sans is a spirit guide/psychopomp angel who has taken being disconnected from heaven pretty hard. Outside of the context of defending and collecting souls as part of a greater purpose, it's harder and harder for him to withstand the emotional burden of dealing with dead and dying people, and a lot of the time he wonders what the point of it all is supposed to be. He also struggles a lot with the idea that he could potentially be helping to avoid these mortal's death, but both doesn't know if its his place to do so/doesn't want to take on the burden of action, and would rather just let things happen as they may.
Due to his listlessness and growing malaise, he's pretty shit about properly sticking to his duties, and spends a lot of time dicking around with mind altering substances and human media. He sort of half lives in Demon Psi's apartment despite not paying rent, and is basically just a terrible mooch. He also hangs out a lot in the local Cat Cafe, Crossroads, several local bars, and drops by the Sanctuary occasionally to share the Hot Goss with Helen.
The rest of his time he spends stalking people who are soon to die, which he can pick out with his angelic death vision. He doesn't know exactly how they'll die, though, so he mostly just follows the doomed around until it happens, so that he can guide their souls to the afterlife before they can become lost/get eaten by a demon or something. This also means that he's just sort of inherently a dick to vampires and zombies, and generally speaking he won't hesitate to tell them that they should really just let him take their souls to the afterlife instead of letting them become corrupted by dark magics/bloodblust.
He's got a softspot for undead that were killed before their time however, and will often end up shirking his proper angel duties to try to give them a break - choosing to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't become a nuisance rather than taking the more truly angelic path of just smiting them and escorting their souls with or without permission. He's not a warrior and thus not built primarily for combat, but he can still be pretty deadly with a combination of speed and cleverness.
His angelic form is basically his usual skeleton self but with wings made of light and more eyes that necessary. He's got eyes in his ribcage for fuck's sake. He doesn't teleport, but he can move extremely quickly by wing, and can also turn invisible/intangible.
Helen's been around for a long while, since about 1850, on earth specifically to aid in the delicate balance between Humans and other species. Her dedication to this role is one that has spanned more than a century. While her main duty is that of a Guardian in nature, she is fully equipped to defend the Sanctuary Network as a Warrior. Helen first began her work in Victorian London, auditing courses at Oxford until she could obtain a medical doctorate, her studies took her to Switzerland for a conference that would change the course of her initial work and make it that much more personal.
In the early to near mid-1890s, she attended a medical conference near Reichenbach Falls. During her second day at the conference, she found herself drawn toward the falls itself due to some incredibly dark necromancy that raised a whole other set of hackles - and her wings. There, she found none other than Sherlock Holmes and pulled him from the water and did what she could to mend the particularly shoddy job his Maths Professor rival did at making the man a zombie. After a series of adventures while building up her first Sanctuary house in London, she, and shortly after, Mr Holmes, founded the Portland Sanctuary house. Together and with Helen's significant contacts between the two houses, this became The Sanctuary Network.
Over the course of her life in Portland, she has set in place many places of shelter for beings who have extrasensory abilities to those who are zombies, vampires, werewolves - anything that would be considered Abnormal to the majority of the Human populace. She provides, at not cost, room and board for those who need it or those who may be considered too dangerous to live outside the confines of her Portland or London facilities. Helen has set out to put forth an organisation that judges no one, a sanctuary that is truly for all. In addition to this, Helen regularly supports the Changeling Network in their efforts to provide food, safety, and housing to those who need it.
Her protege, Will Zimmerman, grew up as part of this institution and is a werebeast of the feline variety. He is also very much like her son and one day, if the Severing ends and she is recalled, he will take over the Sanctuary Network itself. Helen, as usual, as that all planned out.
In addition to her duties as Head of the Sanctuary Network, Helen also aids in the capture of dangerous, out of control species that threaten the fragile balance between the Human and Abnormal worlds. As this balance is the sort of thing that must remain in the shadows, it is necessary for her Sanctuary staff and herself to locate, negotiate, and essentially deal with threats against Portland and London. They, however, are not the only player on the board, which means that Helen has contacts and regular negotiations between many of the major factions in Portland and elsewhere. These relations can be strained to friendly depending on the current political climate but Helen does her best to navigate those sometimes troubled waters as best as she can.
Helen is also fairly well known for being unable to give up on anyone, a fact that has gotten her into more than a few situations before and will do so again.
Powers: Her powers are fairly typical of a decent ranking angel. Holy magic; She is quite adept at holy magic, has healing abilities that she mainly uses on other, regeneration - mostly for others, really, purification, has a fantastic grasp on smiting, though it's a last resort, high-speed flight; though she favours tall buildings for the drop. Her intangibility could probably use some work since she never uses it. Her only use of spirit guiding thus far has been with Sherlock Holmes.
Wings:Helen's wings look very much like stained glass and glow like sunlight pouring through them but they are actual feathers. If you touch them, they're actually incredibly soft and warm.
Angelic Form: Her Angelic form gets pretty intense when she goes all Warrior, which hasn't happened since she found Sherlock, honestly but an angel looking like she's about to go all Darkside...yeah. Most of the time, though, she looks very much like herself only much, much brighter.
In this universe, Yugo's name is rendered differently into "Hugo". The 'H' is silent. (I know I make terrible jokes.)
Hugo is a guardian angel that leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to doing his job, so it seems that age doesn't quite beget wisdom for him. Not that he doesn't appear formidable in his true draconic form, which includes plate armor-like scales as tough as they look, three pairs of crystalline wings that glow with holy light, and strong claws. Go for his stomach, it's the weak point in his scales.
The severing from heaven left him rather lost and forlorn about what he should still be doing, but eventually Hugo met and fell in love for a young 18-year-old engineering student at first sight. Too bad for him she had a boyfriend already... but not for long. Jerry, a gamer nerd with dyed purple and pink hair, suffers a fatal brain injury after a car crash that would've otherwise killed both university students instantly if not for the invisible stalker dragon catching the vehicle in his claws.... But it wasn't as if Hugo wanted Jerry dead, obviously-in fact he didn't know Jerry would die anyway. Internal injuries and avoiding authorities does that.
Hugo eventually moved in with Reina in her tiny university dorm. Because of a partial memory regain though, the idiot frequently mistakes her for... someone he distantly remembers because it just "feels right" and "Are you sure your name's not Rin?"
Since no one in the right mind would turn down an easy chance for powerful magic from an angel, Reina made a contract with him even if the price was to start "dating" this desperate moron. But behind his back, Reina decided it was more fun being a general shithead of a warlock, using her new holy given powers like a teenaged girl with an unlimited credit card.
You may know Hugo because of Reina's general fuckery then you went to complain... and/or tried convince him into yanking the leash on his contract with the girl. Which might be tricky since Reina is also a manipulative jerk that has him wrapped around her little finger.
Alternatively, one might run a slightly weird black-haired guy with banana blond bangs hanging around that same university. But with such an angelic aura about him, that dude totally must have a good reason to be there.
ABILITIES: High Speed Flight, Invisibility Holy Magic, SMITING, Regeneration
Joker is a guardian angel, and has been one for a good while. Most of the time, he's given the task of looking over certain individuals. Before the Severing, the particular child in question was Sora, and it's probably the continued task of looking over him that keeps Joker going as well as he does, unlike some people that could be named. Outside of this task, he's not particularly divine, often keeping himself out of any particular angel business or demon bullshit unless it directly affects him and his charge.
Predictably, he hangs out at the dorms that Sora also lives in, which means he technically lives with Snake the weresnake and Tamaki the bratty teenage ghost. While the former doesn't exactly know he's there, the latter does and never lets him live it down. It's partially because of that which has Joker occasionally bounce out. This explains how he knows other people besides simply angels.
Joker doesn't have a strong tie to many other people, although he does occasionally help out at the Sanctuary when approached. He does have a good relationship with equally shitty demon Psionic. Sometimes he gets harassed by Allen Walker to help him with his weird shit?? Joker doesn't know what's up with the kid. However, he does on occasion point Hinawa in the direction of any interesting mysteries, mostly just for fun.
One time Elsa tried to dump a body near the school dorms and there might have been Problems had there. There were definitely problems, actually.
His angelic form is something vaguely humanoid-shaped, but with constant colorful shifting lights. Most of the time he just prefers the wings, however, which are nice and white and don't give people migraines looking at them.
Julien is here Iuliael (you can pronounce it in literally any way and he'll respond), formerly part of a major seraphim who's usually called variations on the Dove of God. Unwilling to leave Heaven the Dove sent Iuliael to be the Eye and the Voice and the Hand - sort of a remote presence, with little free will. Seraphim are beings of passion, consumed with it themselves and stoking it in others. Iuliael was too filled with a seraphim's burning righteous purpose to understand why angels weren't constantly rooting out and cleansing evil and did not make many friends as a result.
The Severing, and being cut off from that direct line to holy passion, kind of broke Iuliael, who had a semipublic fit somewhere in suburbia that lasted days but hurt no one, due to fleeing as soon as anyone came to investigate the wailing. As part of the Dove it saw and judged and meted punishment and mercy, without that connection Iuliael lost most powers and all authority and sense of purpose. Refusing to attach to anyone else, Iuliael wandered and searched for purpose alone. They sometimes come off as childlike or at least quite young and scattered, either unwilling or unable to dwell on the future.
A seraph's nature is all fire and music. Seeming to turn from despair Iuliael has taken to seeing the holy in everything and projecting great joie de vivre, and sings nearly constantly, joining their voice to other singers when possible, singing alone, even very quietly, when not. Most of their remaining powers are related to emotion, specifically passionate emotions; they can influence and evoke. Basically a Bard, buffing and debuffing and soothing and rousing. When they join a choir every member sings their best, and for the length of a song the world is full of wonder and beauty. As such Iuliael is sort of a traveling muse who will help people but not seek out trouble. They've stopped by or pitched in at the Sanctuary from time to time.
Since they're part of a seraphim their form is strange and nightmarish, a moving mass of wings and eyes and features changing like flame. They can shape this into a human guise which is androgynous and mostly okay, though there's the sense that if you look away and back their hair and clothing has changed subtly, and into a flock of various pigeons. As a very inhuman angel Iuliael never took gendered pronouns but, by now, thinks they look like fun without seeing how they apply. So they basically just try on the pronouns of whoever they're speaking to and want men to call him him, women to call him her, etc. This will get extra confusing as Iuliael's gonna be half-and-half with Julien's memories.
Zangetsu will be a warrior type angel named Marmaroth. “Angel” is used in the most Old Testament way — even before the Severing. In this setting, Marmaroth is a smiter and a damn good one at that — his is the flaming blade that shatters fate. He didn’t much care for humans before, and since being stranded on Earth, he hates them even more. He’s also more or less a fallen angel. He’s forsaken his duty and instead comes up with bullshit reasons to smite people because it’s fun and humans suck.
Oh, you cut him off in traffic? Well remember last week when you bumped that car in the parking lot? SMITED. Wear white after Labor Day? SMITED. Forget to say grace before dinner? SMITED. Oddly enough, as mean and foul-tempered as Marmaroth is, he loves to hang out at the Cat Cafe and can be found there most days... and at the Crossroads most nights.
Of course, Zangetsu remembers none of this and is just thrust into Marmaroth’s shoes.
He has an appearance like a pale-skinned young human man with long white hair in a ponytail and golden yellow eyes. In his fully angelic form, he has a basic bipedal humanoid form. His face is human save his black sclera’d eyes and he retains his long white hair. He wears a black dragon’s skull on his head like a headdress. The horns form something of a broken halo, and between them is a miniature black sun. His body is covered in bone-like bits of exoskeleton or armor, and his legs resemble something between an insect’s and a bird’s. He has two pairs of wings, black with blade-like feathers and many golden, black-sclera eyes. His tail is long, slender, and reptilian, with a large blade on the end.
As for powers, he can fly real fast, summon a flaming sword for SMITING, SMITE with Holy fire/light, and heal his own injuries. He can’t do a single thing to help humans with their problems. Unless their problem is being alive.
