[ well that's unexpected! Strange frowns, bites his lip a little, frowns again, mulls it over, before answering... ]

As of now, you're the first person here who knows that there was a point in my life where I considered giving up being a practical magician entirely.

Really? [A pause.] Is it because your wife doesn't like it?

[The only thing Strange could possibly value more than magic: Arabella.]

[ Strange nods. ] There was a period of time where I did something rash and dangerous because of my magic. [ like, you know, every goddamn day. ] Arabella wasn't pleased, we got into an argument, and I realized that if I had to choose between my magic and her happiness, I'd pick her happiness.

[hippocarnival]

... Don't you do rash and dangerous things even without magic? [He's not seeing what the breaking point here is, though he can understand Arabella's frustration.] Like climbing up trellises.

Exploring a sealed away faerie realm is a different branch of dangerous than climbing up trellises.

A subset of faerie runs parallel to my world, accessible through what are called the king's roads—roads that connect places in faerie, built by the Raven King. I rediscovered the pathways and spent an entire evening lost on the roads, exploring everything that faerie and the Raven King's roads had to offer. I thought it was amazing, a magical discovery that I could explore and spend time searching. Arabella thought it was dangerous.

It was, of course. But I couldn't see the danger at the time.

Something can be dangerous and exciting. Maybe if you were being more careful, or... has she ever tried using magic herself?

[ And Strange shakes his head. ]

You have to understand: for the longest time, English magic was sealed away. Only certain people could access it—I can only think of four specifically. Even if the tried and wanted to use magic, there's a possibility that while I was a magician, she simply couldn't.

[hippocarnival]

Oh, right. [Never know if you never try, though! Though she may just be happier not being a magician.]

[ He'll never see it coming. Yuya will just be minding his own business when, fwump. There's a bat on his back, wings wrapped awkwardly around his middle. Peridot has basically velcroed herself to him. A grumpy voice squeaks from directly behind him: ]

I'm supposed to stay here for one hour. No breaks. Blame Childermass.

Whoa! [Yuya first attempts to just like, rip her off and stops short of grabbing Peridot when she speaks.]

... Oh. It's a dare, right? [That's what everyone's playing.] Uh, is that comfortable?

[periphrasing]

[ There's a beat before she answers. ]

...Not particularly.

... Did you do something that made him want you to do this? [Peridot is really getting the short end of the stick here.]
