He's a little uncomfortable about the emotion-reading? Back home in Keye if someone could read him he could read them right back, he feels wrong-footed about it being all on one side, but he tries to work around it. Julien's easygoing and inclined to like people and ignore things like that.

Though he can tell she's had a really rough upbringing he doesn't know a quarter of it. And doesn't really want to know, tbh? It seems more important to try and be kind now. There's a lot of good first experiences she could have, and he likes hanging out with her.

And he blames himself more for her involvement in Scary Hole than he does for any of the ones who resulted. Julien's not totally unrealistic in his sense of guilt, but if he'd not had the bright idea to help her she wouldn't go through all the things so badly.
