I figure Childermass may have been in contact with the Sanctuary early on after he escaped back into the mortal realm. He's been out for about eight years now, but probably dropped out of contact after a year or two due to other complications (like agreeing to serve the Rose Queen, etc).

So Helen may have met him all of once or twice, but who knows?
