This sounds? Ideal???? Foster is a lot less.... uh, desperately in NEED of LIFE THREATENING STIMULATION to make his life tolerable, so even once he learns Psi's actually a huge weirdo, he'll probably continue to play along because it's? Fun? It's fun, okay. Let him have his fun.
If we still wanna do the fake relationship thing, that just sort of adds an extra layer to that--the most meta game of pretend ever, featuring Psi and Foster von Denend. With added benefits, I guess.
But also, the memory/magic gaslighting power is probably the most thematically AND functionally perfect power ever for Foster. It's even better when you consider how much more he's just a garden variety shitlord (his sense of humour is, in all incarnations, borderline 'shitpost) in this AU? So I'm gonna definitely make use of that kind of thing for Foster, with your permission.
Fire is flashy and all-devouring/destructive, which appeals to Foster a lot more than... like, blah blah elaborate spellcasting. He views mage spells as being kind of... like, dad magic. Boring and SAFE and also tbh why do you need SO MANY ways to do the SAME THING.... he's probably just salty because his parents were mages tbh but like... he doesn't have the temperament for theory and navel gazing, he wants RESULTS.
I mean, this is a guy who, faced with the choice between predictable and stable employment and 'digging in people's garbage to sell their shit because it's more fun and gives him more freedom to fuck around, and also raises a giant middle finger to his parents,' picked the latter.
But also, this is perfect for PSI, because Foster having lupus in this AU means he has flareups and whatnot, which would totally cover for Psi's minor act of soul-taking. FOSTER would know what had happened, and PSI would, but no one else would have to know.
P.S. In this AU, Foster has basically zero motive to try and make someone evil (yet?) but he might have a 'sense' that it exists, and so the potential for some kind of shenanigans is there if we want it???
